Outdoor Gyms by Play on Art, in conjunction with City Parks, presented the South African Outdoor Gym Oval to the City of Cape Town on the Sea Point Promenade on Tuesday 13th December.
Outdoor Gyms and BASA (Biokinetics Association of South Africa) have a national vision of collaborating with the private and public sector to address health and fitness in South Africa. Founded in 2009 by Ros Rubenstein, Breann Jacobs and Lisa Lowenthal, Outdoor Gyms has a national vision for “free and accessible fitness for all”.
“Many people in our communities do not have the financial resources to join a professional gym, but with the rollout of our Outdoor Gyms, they are able to enjoy and benefit from free and accessible fitness,” says Rubenstein
“Obesity, lifestyle illnesses and depression have become serious problems in South Africa, and the installation of these gyms will allow individuals to take up the challenge in making exercise a part of their daily lives. Exercising in the presence of nature, where you are the energy behind the gym, is the green way to go,” continues Jacobs.
Outdoor Gyms has invested two years of research into the development of the product, and claim that their equipment is on par with global best practice. The gym pieces have been developed and manufactured by local designers, engineers, biokinetiscists, and fitness and health experts, with maximum safety in mind. The apparatus is robust, weather proof, colorful, fun, low maintenance and as vandal proof as possible.
