Live Magazine UK creates mini-mag in SA

Gavin Weale, Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow and publisher of Live Magazine UK, has in association with Ikamva Youth, created a one-off mini-mag in South Africa.

The original Live magazine was established 10 years ago in London. The project was created for local government, to allow young people from under-privileged neighbourhoods to express themselves through citizen journalism, and is created entirely by young people for young people.

In light of Live magazine’s London success (140,000 readers), Livity, the social enterprise that developed the project, is launching Live Magazine in Cape Town later this year. It is funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation. Given the number of young people growing up under even more challenging circumstances, Live Magazine’s social enterprise model has huge potential in South Africa.

Weale, now operating out of Cape Town, has teamed up with Ikamva Youth, a township-based non-profit organization that empowers young people from less privileged backgrounds to improve their own education, via tutoring and mentoring from volunteers. Twenty-five young people from the Township of Masiphumulele, Makhaza and Nyanga came together to create this one-off mini magazine in only one week, with the help of a handful of media mentors.

Supernews followed this young team around for one week as they conducted interviews, directed fashion shoots and wrote articles. Ikamva Live Magazine will be distributed in places frequented by young people, with 20,000 copies going out via Ikamva Youth centres, local distribution channels and peer-to-peer via the Ikamvanites themselves.
