Mobile clinics test breast cancer patients for free

During October’s Breast Cancer month, Adventure Boot Camp (ABC), which focuses on women and health issues from fitness to awareness programmes, decided to raise R40 000 to open 10 mobile clinics. Their aim was to travel to disadvantaged communities and provide free mammograms, pap smears and other important tests. Each of the 33 camps nationwide were requested to have “drop in camps” or hikes and all proceeds would go to CANSA (The Cancer Association of South Africa).

Michelle Rozowsky, owner of Adventure Boot Camp Houghton, and one of the organisers says, “I masterminded a simple plan with the initial goal of raising an additional R5000 from ABC Houghton over and above our contribution from the Gauteng CANSA hike we ran in October. I wanted to do something that combined Women’s Health Day with a CANSA fundraiser, and seeing that breast cancer is a woman’s health issue, it fitted in perfectly.”

Women’s Health Day is run on the third Monday of every camp in conjunction with Women’s Health magazine’s featured exercises. Campers were asked to find 10 sponsors to contribute R10. They in turn had to perform and  complete exercises in 20 minutes.

“My ladies embraced this challenge with such passion and energy. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that such a simple concept, executed with precise organisation, would be so incredibly successful”, exclaims Rozowsky. “Instead of R5000, we ended up raising more than R58 000 – in addition to the CANSA hike. We at Houghton are so proud of what we have achieved to make a difference in women’s  lives. It just goes to show with a little dedication, teamwork and much inspiration, anything is possible!”
