Have you ever wanted to help shift policy and change the minds of our local leaders on the most important issues facing South Africa and the world today? This is your chance.
Listen to Lewis Pugh’s speech `Standing up to Goliath’
Fracking definition: // hydraulic fracture mining; a process that involves the drilling of a well into the shale rock and then pumping in a mixture of water and chemicals to place the gas under pressure so that it begins to flow. The gas can be turned into oil and used to generate electricity.
“Our Constitution declares the Right to a Healthy Environment and the Right to Water. Our Constitution states that we have the Right to have our environment protected for the benefit of our generation and for the benefit of future generations”.
Lewis Pugh, environmental campaigner, extreme swimmer, aka The Human Polar Bear, and spokesman for Treasure the Karoo Action Group, is inspiring Citizen Activism. With a pending decision from government to grant Shell fracking rights in the Karoo, Pugh is calling on local citizens and environmental action groups to stand up to Shell by supporting an alternative energy solution to fossil fuels, which are becoming scarcer, more expensive and environmentally damaging to extract. In fact, harm to the environment would be irreparable and any potential employment opportunities and economic benefits would dry up as soon as the wells did.
Energy companies are well aware of public sensitivity to environmental issues, and Shell (notorious for spilling more than 9 million barrels of crude oil into the Niger Delta – twice the amount of oil spilt by BP in the Gulf of Mexico), cannot afford to give the public any cause for concern, because the legal, regulatory and reputational damage would severely threaten its business.
“Now is the time for change. We cannot drill our way out of the energy crisis. The era of fossil fuels is over. We must invest in renewable energy. And we must not delay!…We too are tired. Tired of corporate tyranny. Tired of your short term, unsustainable practices”.
