Ikamva Labantu, meaning ‘Future of Our Nation’, operates in the poverty-stricken townships of South Africa, bringing hope and possibility to over 1000 orphans, 12,000 pre-school children and more than 540 senior citizens. Founded by Helen Lieberman in 1963, the community-led organisation now employs over 100 members of staff.
On Friday 2nd December, Ikamva launched the Enkululekweni Wellness Centre in Ward 64 in Khayelitsha. The much anticipated centre will enable communities to practice preventative health by empowering them with knowledge and services, and encouraging them to take personal responsibility for their own health.
Absa CEO Maria Ramos, described the centre as a “dream come true for the community….a Place of Freedom”, adding that, “this is what being human means because it’s about doing good and tangible work that makes a difference in the lives of others”.
Lieberman, the honorary president of Ikamva Labantu, believes that the centre will be a best-practice model for promoting health and wellness in impoverished communities, by providing services that address the unique needs of townships.
Western Cape Premier and DA leader, Helen Zille unveiled the new centre, with other honorary guests including Gaynor Rupert (Chairperson of Ikamva Labantu’s Board of Protectors), Richard van Rensburg (Chairman of Ikamva Labantu’s Board of Trustees), and several community leaders. Mr Patrick Mnqxuyeni, Ward 94 Councillor for Khayelitsha and members of the Ithemba Labantwana Choir also took part in the event.
The Enkululekweni Wellness Centre will focus on Health Education, Preventative Health and Health Promotion. Ikamva Labantu beneficiaries will be trained in healthy life-styles through a variety of nine modules. Provision for screening for the early detection of precursors of serious illness or disease itself will be provided. The centre will also play the role of a Health and Nutrition Unit, promoting health and strengthening community action towards taking control of their own health.
