- Hip Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas
- Electro B Popping
- Freestyle
The 6th annual South African Hip Hop Dance Championship was hosted on the 5th-6th May welcoming a range of Hip-Hop crews and solo dancers from all over the country, competing for a chance to represent South Africa at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas from July 30th-5th August.
Hip Hop Dance SA is the proud local representative of Hip Hop International (USA) who are the hosts of the yearly World Hip Hop Dance Championships. Their aim is to give South Africa’s dancers an opportunity to perform, compete and gain recognition on an international stage.
Cape Town dancer, Ethan Benson, also known as Electro-B, was the winner of this year’s event. The event was dubbed ‘Dance to Las Vegas’ and was held at CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology).
Alhough he did not make the final round, Benson says, “My experience in Vegas was life changing. I came back to South Africa with more knowledge about ‘popping’, (a dance style that incorporates the rhythmic contraction of the dancer’s muscles and pantomimed movements, usually to funk or hip-hop music). I experienced what its like to compete on an international level and even though it took a lot of courage… the entire experience was worth it.”
