0 viewsTable Mountain has been named by the New7Wonders Foundation as one of the world’s new 7 wonders. Securing a huge level of global support, as well as an unprecedented amount of domestic votes, the famous South African landmark successfully concluded a three year campaign that places it in the history books, and amongst the top seven of 440 sites of natural outstanding beauty which were named in 2008.
Table Mountain joins South America’s Amazon River, the Vietnamese Halong Bay, Agentina’s Iguazu Falls, South Korea’s Jeju Island, Indonesia’s Komodo and the Puerto Princesa Underground River in the Phillippines as the one of the new 7 wonders announced on the 12th November.
With South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, (the first time the competition was held outside North America or Europe), and Cape Town’s recent crowning as the World Design Capital 2014, it is clear that the country is quickly establishing itself as an international player on an international stage.
Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism says, “We are very, very excited about this win! From being awarded the World Design Capital 2014 designation just a few weeks ago to Table Mountain being named one of the New7Wonders of Nature today, Cape Town and South Africa are standing proud! There are many benefits, but our biggest opportunity is the potential for job creation. In line with Cape Town Tourism’s new brand strategy for the city, we are working with individuals and companies on developing new, interesting, and genuine tourism offerings to satisfy our changing travellers’ needs. With the anticipated 20% increase in inbound travel to South Africa, and particularly to Cape Town, there are going to be increased entrepreneurial opportunities opening up.”
