Putting Cape Town’s best foot forward for 2014

On the 25th and 26th of July, Cape Town will be judged. In our bid to be named as World Design Capital for 2014, the Mother City will show an international jury how we use various forms of design to improve and transform life.

Out of the 50 countries that took part three finalists remain, Cape Town, and our two opponents namely Bilbao in the north of Spain and Dublin, Ireland’s capital. The winning city, to be announced in October, will host international design events for the duration of 2014. The exposure that Cape Town, and South Africa for that matter, has already received during the bidding process has already placed it on the international design map.

Awarded by the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) since 1957 the winners have included Torino, Italy (2008); Seoul, South Korea (2010) and Helsinki, Finland (for 2012). The focus areas for Cape Town’s bid include Stellenbosch, Robben Island, the Cape Flats, Cape Point and around False Bay to Gordons Bay.

Supernews will be following the judging panel around the Western Cape to capture the countdown process. So stay glued.
